2006 Conference Update: Change in Venue

The Program Committee and Board of JWHA have announced that our 2006 Conference will be held in Independence, Missouri, rather than at Camp Doniphan in Excelsior Springs. (Both locations are in the greater Kansas City area.)

Our conference theme this year is "Scattering of the Saints: The Diverse Expressions of the Restoration." Because so many of the churches which make up the "Diverse Expressions" are headquartered in Independence, the new conference venue will greatly facilitate our Saturday tours. Tour locations this year will include visits and presentations at:
  • The Church of Christ (Temple Lot)
  • The Church of Jesus Christ (Alpheus Cutler)
  • The headquarters of the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
  • Artifacts from the Archives and Temple of the Community of Christ
The plenary and concurrent sessions of the conference will be held at the newly renovated Truman Memorial Building — just 2 blocks northeast of the Community of Christ Temple (see map on page 2). This facility was the site of our Spring Banquet last year.

Our Sterling M. McMurrin lecturer will be W. Grant McMurray. Steve Shields, author of The Divergent Paths of the Restoration, will give a plenary address on our conference theme. JWHA President Newell Bringhurst’s will give an address entitled, "Schism within the Mormon Restoration: The Influence of Race, Gender and Ethnicity."

Our theme this year clearly excited our membership and the broader community of scholars who responded by submitting proposals for numerous original and topical presentations that you will not want to miss. Our tentative program plans include sessions or individual presentations many "Diverse Expressions of the Restoration" including groups led or reorganized by:
  • William Bickerton
  • Alpheus Cutler
  • R.C. Evans
  • Dan and Duane Gayman
  • William Godbe
  • Granville Hedrick
  • Fred Larsen
  • Joseph Morris
  • James Strang
  • David Whitmer
  • Lyman Wight
In addition, there will be sessions covering plural marriage, Mormon Fundamentalism, recent controversies and schism in the Reorganization and also the tragedy of the Jeffrey Lundgren group.

More program details will be included here and in upcoming JWHA newsletters.
