Prior to the Symposium there will be a special advance screening of Adam Christing's upcoming documentary
A Mormon President about Joseph Smith Jr.'s 1844 run for the US presidency.
Following the screening we are extremely excited to welcome Wallace B. Smith,
president emeritus of the Community of Christ, who will officially open the first annual
Restoration Studies Symposium with his reflections on the path that he and the Community of
Christ have followed in recent decades, and his thoughts on the future.
President Smith's address will be followed by a reception sponsored by Herald House and John
Whitmer Books.

| Saturday |
Saturday's events begin with a plenary session on the future status and use of the
Book of Mormon in the Community of Christ, discussed by a panel of leading thinkers on
Community of Christ theology.
Another plenary session will be held at noon with an accompanying pizza lunch, with panelists
discussing the ten Mormons who have run for President of the United States since 1844.
The remainder of the day (morning and afternoon) is a series of concurrent sessions with paper presentations
and panel discussions covering a wide variety of theological and religious and cultural studies topics.
The Symposium comes to a close with an evening plenary address by renowned scholar Jan Shipps,
who will draw upon her forty years of studying the Latter Day Saint movement to reflect on
the place and trajectory of the Community of Christ within the broader Restoration context.

historic sites and artifacts.

Kansas City International Airport is 30 miles from central Independence, and one-way shuttle rides will cost you
more than $50. If you are flying to the Symposium, we recommend renting a car rather than taking a shuttle or taxi
because you will likely spend less money and will have more freedom to get around Independence and the Kansas City metro
area.
If you need accommodations in Independence, the most convenient location is the Olive Branch Inn, which is just
half a mile east of the conference venue. The Olive Branch has only 30 rooms, so call early to reserve your
room before the hotel fills up.
