JWHA and CSA have also joined this year to organize three pre-conference tours on Thursday, September 27
from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm:
| Mormon Sites |
Visits to key Kirtland-area historic sites, including Historic Kirtland, which includes the
restored Newell K. Whitney Store and Whitney Home, site of significant Latter Day Saint events;
exploration of an 1830s ashery and sawmill with discussion of joint ownership within the United Order;
Isaac Morley Farm, site of a communal experiment among the followers of Sidney Rigdon
(pre-Joseph Smith) and the 1831 Latter Day Saint experiment under the leadership of Smith;
John Johnson Farm, located in Hiram, Ohio, site of the tarring and feathering of Joseph Smith
and Sidney Rigdon in 1832, as well as early theological developments that impacted LDS views
of heaven, communal order, doctrine, etc.; and Fairport Harbor, the disembarkartion point for
Saints gathering to Kirtland from the New York area. |
| Zoar Village |
One hour south of Kirtland, Zoar, the 1817 home of the German Pietist Zoar Separatists, is a
real village as well as a restoration. Ten museum buildings are operated by the Ohio Historical
Society and together tell the story of this group and their leader Joseph Bimeler, who founded one
of the most successful communal societies in the 19th century. Not only will you get an in-depth
tour of the site, but after lunch at the Zoar Tavern, housed in two historic structures, you will
get the opportunity to visit the un-restored interior of the landmark Zoar Hotel, the cemetery and
other buildings that tell the story of this communal group. |
| Shaker Sites |
The Shaker Sites tour begins at the Western Reserve Historical Society Library in Cleveland’s
University Circle. Housed there is the Society’s Shaker Collection, a resource known to Shaker scholars
the world over. You will get the chance to look at some of the gems of the collection, talk to the
curator and perhaps research a bit. If there is time, you can visit the museum too. Lunch is at Yours
Truly, a restaurant at Shaker Square, one of the first shopping centers. It and the community around it,
Shaker Heights, is a very early planned community, designed by the Van Sweringen Brothers on the property
they purchased from the North Union Shakers after the 1889 closing of their village. After lunch is a
visit to the Shaker Museum, housed not in a Shaker structure (alas, none of these remain), but a Tudor
Revival mansion. |
The cost for each of these tours is $32 and includes lunch. Tours leave promptly at 8:30 am from the Mentor
Comfort Inn and will return well in advance of the Thursday evening McMurrin Lecture Banquet.
